RELX: Márcia Balisciano's Lifetime of Achievement Award
Márcia Balisciano, Chief Sustainability Officer and Global Head of Corporate Responsibility at RELX, has been recognised with the Lifetime of Achievement Award at the Global Sustainability Awards 2025 for her work in the sustainability field.
With more than two decades of leadership, she has been instrumental in building RELX's sustainability function and corporate responsibility team from the ground up.
Her work covers sustainability, ESG, corporate responsibility, governance and stakeholder engagement.
Advancing sustainable development goals
At RELX, corporate responsibility is embedded across the business.
This involves a network of employees participating in corporate responsibility activities, including employee-led Green Teams that champion environmental practices throughout RELX's global locations.
RELX has established public corporate responsibility goals, which include what RELX calls its unique contributions to society: universal sustainable access to information, promoting science and health, the protection of society, furthering the rule of law and fostering communities.
Upon receiving the award, Márcia said: “I am so privileged to be able to receive this.
“I accept this on behalf of the 36,500 people at RELX who advance sustainability in our organisation every day.”
A key initiative that Márcia works on is the RELX SDG Resource Centre, a free platform designed to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This centre gathers articles, tools, data and events from RELX, the UN and other partners.
Leveraging its expertise in data and analytics, RELX is also creating SDG Graphics for each of the 17 SDGs.
These graphics illustrate which countries are leading research, their collaboration levels and the output disparity between the global North and South.
For SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), a finding from 2014–2018 showed that only 1% of research output came from low-income countries, which are often the most affected by water and sanitation challenges.
“I have been so lucky to be at my company throughout my career, which is focused on its unique contributions to society, advancing science and health, protection of society, avoiding risk, promoting the rule of law and access to justice and fostering communities,” says Márcia.
Fostering environmental action and inclusion
A practical application of RELX's and Márcia's commitment to SDG 6 is the RELX Environmental Challenge, a prize that promotes improved access to water and sanitation in the developing world.
The challenge includes a US$50,000 first prize and a US$25,000 second prize.
In 2020, a collaboration prize was added to mark the challenge's 10th anniversary and to encourage teamwork among past winners.
Different divisions within RELX contribute to its sustainability objectives by providing essential environmental insights.
Its tools and services are designed to inform decision-makers and encourage further research and development on environmental issues.
RELX has gained recognition from organisations such as the UN Global Compact, Sustainalytics and MSCI.
