Neveen Hussein, Sustainability Leader Middle East & Africa at Siemens Energy, shares the company's sustainability mission across its global operations

Naveen Hassane, Sustainability Leader for the Middle East and Africa, delivered a keynote presentation at SustainabilityLIVE Dubai titled Sustainability at Siemens Energy.

Naveen offered a comprehensive overview of how the company defines, implements and tracks its ESG strategy.

Rather than focusing on individual green initiatives, Naveen outlined how sustainability is woven into Siemens Energy’s DNA – from board-level governance to employee engagement – and how it underpins both internal operations and customer-facing innovations.

Defining sustainability as a learning journey

Opening her session, Naveen described sustainability at Siemens Energy as “a learning journey for everyone,” highlighting how every employee, team and department is responsible for contributing.

Framing the session as an opportunity to “inspire, share awareness and take you through the journey,” Naveen began by illustrating Siemens Energy’s global footprint, present in more than 90 countries and contributing to around one-sixth of the world’s energy production.

She introduced the ‘energy trilemma’ – balancing affordability, sustainability and reliability – as the guiding concept for the company’s strategy.

Addressing future demand, she cited that energy needs are expected to increase 25% by 2030, compounded further by AI and data centre growth.

Yet 700 million people globally still lack access to electricity, reinforcing the dual challenge of scaling supply while ensuring equity.

“Sustainability,” she explained, “is an umbrella term for all our activities that contribute to prosperity and societal value without damaging the environment.”

Structuring sustainability through ESG and SDG alignment

Naveen went on to detail how Siemens Energy uses ESG frameworks and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to measure and steer its efforts. ESG, she explained, supports progress monitoring across environmental metrics (energy use, waste, emissions), social areas (diversity, safety, human rights) and governance (structures, compliance, incentives).

Siemens Energy aligns its actions with all 17 SDGs, but places a core focus on five: gender equality, access to clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure and climate action.

“ESG criteria help us to measure our performance,” said Naveen, “while SDGs guide us in setting global objectives and sustainability targets.”

The company’s sustainability programme is anchored in a dual commitment: to run responsible operations and to decarbonise customer operations.

A materiality analysis – conducted annually since 2020 – identifies six core focus areas, such as greenhouse gas reduction, energy efficiency, innovation, inclusion and diversity and health and safety.

Governance, accountability and external validation

Naveen highlighted that Siemens Energy’s Chief Executive Officer also serves as its Chief Sustainability Officer – a deliberate choice to embed sustainability at the highest level.

This dual role reinforces accountability, with a supervisory board overseeing progress and quarterly meetings across global hubs to monitor implementation.

Transparency and external benchmarking are key pillars of this governance model.

Siemens Energy consistently receives top marks from sustainability assessors, such as a CDP leadership rating and a gold medal in other ESG evaluations.

It adheres to multiple frameworks, including the EU Global Compact and TCFD, to ensure robust climate-related financial disclosures.

“All our offices are run on 100% clean electricity,” Naveen stated.

The company aims to reach climate neutrality in its own operations by 2030 and to reduce customer-related greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by the same year – targets that are aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The session concluded with Naveen inviting attendees to access Siemens Energy’s full sustainability report, which is published annually in December.

She encouraged delegates to connect via LinkedIn to continue the conversation, noting: “Resilience runs through our report like a watermark.”
