TotalEnergies: Harnessing AI to Speed Up Energy Transition

TotalEnergies, a leading French multinational energy corporation, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Mistral AI, a Paris-based AI startup.
This alliance aims to harness AI to accelerate the deployment of sustainable energy technologies, focusing on renewable energy development and carbon emissions reduction, which are key components of TotalEnergies' broader transition strategy toward sustainability.
Central to this collaboration is the establishment of a joint innovation laboratory.
This facility will be staffed by teams from both companies, combining their strengths to explore AI-driven solutions for environmental sustainability.
Joint efforts on sustainability goals
Mistral AI, known for its development of large language models (LLMs) and robust AI infrastructure, will contribute its advanced AI technologies.
In tandem, TotalEnergies will leverage its deep expertise in energy production, particularly within renewable and low-carbon sectors.
The innovation lab will initially tackle three core applications, aiming to improve sustainability outcomes:
- Creating an AI assistant to support the efforts of 1,000 TotalEnergies researchers in advancing new energy technologies and reducing environmental footprints
- Developing decision-support solutions to boost industrial asset performance while cutting CO₂ emissions
- Implementing support solutions that enhance customer experience and assist consumers in reducing their energy consumption.
Integrating AI in the energy sector
Founded in 2023 by former Google DeepMind and Meta researchers, Mistral AI has quickly positioned itself as a European contender against major US AI firms, thanks to substantial funding.
This partnership supports digital sovereignty within Europe by exploring opportunities for TotalEnergies to utilise European AI infrastructure, reducing reliance on American and Chinese technologies.
This collaboration will facilitate the testing of digital solutions for renewable energy production, alongside other industrial applications.
TotalEnergies has previously applied AI in earth sciences and predictive maintenance, using machine learning algorithms to preemptively detect equipment issues across its extensive operations, which include oil, gas, refining and renewable energy generation.
Advancing AI applications in energy
TotalEnergies' Digital Factory, marking its fifth anniversary, employs 300 experts, including developers, data scientists and digital specialists.
This unit has developed over 100 solutions, with 60 incorporating machine learning and generative AI technologies.
AI now plays a pivotal role in TotalEnergies' strategy to unlock new opportunities in renewable energy production and innovative customer services.
AI is considered essential in helping customers optimise and manage their energy usage more sustainably.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, says: “We are delighted to collaborate with Mistral AI, a leading French AI innovator. This partnership aims to foster a technological ecosystem in Europe, enabling us to explore new opportunities for embedding AI in our activities. AI holds immense potential to transform energy systems.”
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, says: “This partnership demonstrates the positive impact generative AI can have on a strategic sector such as TotalEnergies. By dedicating our AI solutions and expertise to R&D efforts, operational teams, and ultimately, the company's customers, we are contributing to enhanced operations and the digital transformation of this global energy leader.”
