What inspired you to get involved in the event?
I've been to Sustainability LIVE several times before and I always enjoy the conversations.
To me, the event is less about marketing and more about actually discussing the challenges and opportunities ahead of us, head from other companies how they solve a variety of issues, and getting some new insights from the experts present.
It's a great and very useful forum!
What will your panel will focus on?
I will be speaking on the Women in Sustainability panel. I've done this once before with Sustainability LIVE, and it is still one of the best panels I've ever been on!
We see a lot of women in the field of sustainability, but a challenge is that even high-level positions rarely come with the mandate and resources needed to actually drive transformational change.
Being a woman in a very male-dominated field like transport, I've always encountered an extra layer of resistance, partly because I'm advocating change in a very traditional business, partly because it has sometimes taken a lot longer to prove women also know this industry well.
Progress is there, but let's be honest, it is still way too slow. And given the current American administration's quest against DEI, we have to really stay focused to not slow down.
What do you hope to achieve through the event?
I hope to inspire a new generation to push further than my own! To share experiences, tips and tricks and also be honest about the challenges we face from time to time.
What emerging trends do you believe will shape the future of sustainability over the next decade?
We live in uncertain times, that is for sure. Current geopolitics have created so much uncertainty that many are going into a ‘wait and see’ mode. We can not afford that.
Climate change will not wait and see. Our biggest challenge today is to not only mitigate climate change, which we must, but also to adopt.
How are we going to handle complete energy shutdowns like we've just seen in Spain and Portugal? How will we handle ports closing down for weeks due to extreme storms? Snowstorms in Texas?
Heatwaves are impacting the infrastructure across Europe, which were not built to withstand that kind of heat? Because we did not mitigate enough, we now have to adapt, and that will be very costly.
This is the greatest challenge we face today, and it will shape the future of all businesses and the planet.
