ABB and Microsoft are bringing generative AI to industrial environments through ABB's Ability™ Genix Copilot
ABB's Ability Genix Copilot utilises generative AI to enhance productivity, efficiency and sustainability in manufacturing and industrial operations

A stellar example of the importance and benefits of manufacturing partnerships, ABB and Microsoft are working together to innovate the factory floor with generative AI (GenAI).

ABB's GenAI copilot for industrial spaces, Ability Genix Copilot, is an advanced tool that integrates with Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service to analyse extensive data sets and deliver operational insights, driving better productivity, efficiency and sustainability in manufacturing processes.

Advancing beyond basic AI functions

ABB's Ability™ Genix Copilot, created in collaboration with Microsoft, is set to bring the power of Generative AI to the factory floor

Historically, GenAI applications in industry focused primarily on natural language processing, which processes and interprets human language.

In manufacturing, workers interact with AI by entering queries in natural terms. The system then analyses the data to provide necessary answers.

However, the Ability Genix Copilot goes beyond these conventional capabilities.

It supports a conversational interface that allows users to query operational metrics such as asset health and fault analysis.

Additionally, this system leverages large language models like GPT-4, specifically tuned for industrial applications.

By embedding the Genix Copilot into its digital solutions, ABB predicts significant operational cost savings for its customers.

The AI not only enhances production efficiency and maintenance but also optimises energy consumption and reduces emissions.

“At ABB, digitalisation and AI are at the core of delivering more value to our customers, with a substantial part of our R&D workforce dedicated to digital, AI and software," says Peter Terwiesch, President, ABB Process Automation.

"Collaboration of ABB and Microsoft on generative AI is an important step in driving innovation and shaping the future of industry, helping our customers outrun – leaner and cleaner.

“With Genix Copilot, we can bring a new era of user experience, collaboration and consumerisation of real-time actionable insights across roles."

ABB is already seeing three key use cases for its Ability™ Genix Copilot experience early adoption
  • Genix Asset Performance Management Copilot: Delivers intuitive experience for maintenance teams in asset-intensive industries, delivering summaries, recommendations, analytics and predictive maintenance suggestions
  • Genix My Measurement Assistant Copilot: Streamlines troubleshooting and maintenance for industrial devices by providing relevant documentation, error codes etc
  • Genix Sustainability Insights Copilot: Enhances sustainability efforts by providing actionable insights on energy consumption and emission management

Wide-ranging data utilisation

The Ability Genix Copilot is designed to manage and analyse diverse data sources including shop floor operations, operator discussions and enterprise systems.

This vast array of data provides the basis for the tool's comprehensive insights, supported by its natural language capabilities.

The AI offers a role-based user experience, delivering real-time insights tailored to various operational roles — from engineers addressing equipment issues to executives making strategic decisions.

ABB is helping industry unlock the power of AI

In addition to enhancing operational efficiency, the system emphasises data security and promotes collaborative decision-making across different manufacturing roles.

Further strengthening its capabilities, the Genix Copilot has been developed in close collaboration with Microsoft.

The leading entity in industrial AI innovation's industrial AI solutions and joint initiative with the Volkswagen Group and PTC focuses on manufacturing, leveraging its Azure OpenAI Service.

“Working with ABB, we’re truly pushing the boundaries of what generative AI can do for industry," says Sonja Meindl, Enterprise Commercial Director, Microsoft Switzerland.
