Ecolab CSO Emilio Tenuta on the importance of aligning sustainability with corporate strategy – and why water scarcity must be a boardroom priority

The sustainability landscape has shifted dramatically, moving from a voluntary corporate responsibility to a critical business strategy that shapes resource management, particularly water conservation. Emilio Tenuta, Ecolab Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, has witnessed this evolution over his 41 years with the company and 16 years in sustainability leadership. At Sustainability LIVE Climate Week NYC, Emilio challenged executives to provide “Proof, not Promises,” urging them to drive growth and impact.

Ecolab’s 2024 Growth & Impact Report highlights the company’s achievements: conserving 226 billion gallons of water, protecting 1.7 billion people from foodborne illnesses and infections, and helping customers avoid 4.6 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Since 2019, Ecolab’s solutions have delivered US$9.1bn in cumulative value through water conservation, resource efficiency, and operational improvement.

Sustainability is now a boardroom priority, driven by regulation, investor expectations, and operational risk. Emilio explains that modern sustainability leaders must demonstrate measurable business value through efficiency, risk mitigation, and innovation. Smart technologies, including AI and Ecolab’s 3D TRASAR system, enable predictive water management and operational optimization. AI-enabled tools like the Smart Water Navigator are expanding these capabilities further.

Faced with a projected 56% global freshwater deficit by 2030, Emilio emphasizes that water is the “number one physical risk” for businesses. Ecolab promotes circular water strategies, reusing water and reducing operational risk. Collective action, through initiatives like the Water Resilience Coalition and WaterEquity’s Climate Resilience Fund, amplifies impact. Emilio concludes: aligning sustainability with business strategy drives growth, resilience, and a meaningful global contribution.
