ABB's Secret to Success in Decarbonising Its Facilities

As industries and buildings face mounting pressure to align with global sustainability targets, it's common to see corporate sustainability strategies, frameworks and initiatives with more and more frequency.
ABB, a global leader in technology and electrification, has its own initiative called Mission to Zero, a campaign which offers a clear blueprint for meaningful change.
Led by Mike Mustapha, Division President of ABB Smart Buildings, the initiative demonstrates how technology, collaboration and a shift in mindset can drive industries towards cleaner, leaner operations.
"Our mission is clear: to help industries and buildings achieve leaner and cleaner operations," Mike says.
This ambition is more than corporate rhetoric; it has translated into tangible results across ABBâs global facilities, setting a benchmark for sustainable transformation in industrial operations.
A blueprint born in LĂźdenscheid
The campaign began at ABBâs Smart Buildings facility in LĂźdenscheid, Germany.
This pilot project integrated solar panels, electric vehicle chargers and battery storage to create a seamless energy management solution.
The result was an impressive annual reduction of 750 tons of COâe emissions. More importantly, it became a scalable model for other sites.
Today, more than 20 ABB facilities have adopted similar strategies, collectively reducing COâe emissions by 30,000 tons annually â the equivalent of taking more than 7,000 petrol cars off the road.
Of this, ABBâs Smart Buildings division alone has contributed a 13,000-ton reduction, underscoring the divisionâs leadership role in the campaign.
Local solutions, global impact
The success of Mission to Zero is built on flexibility. Each facility tailors its solutions to local conditions while sharing insights across the network.
This adaptable approach has been key to the programmeâs growth, particularly given that buildings account for more than 30% of global energy consumption and 26% of COâ emissions, according to the International Energy Agency.
"True transformation requires more than technology. Itâs about inspiring a mindset shift," Mike says.
At ABB, leaders act as coaches, encouraging employees to take ownership of sustainability efforts. This collaborative, bottom-up model has been instrumental in driving meaningful change.
ABB's success stories, from Italy to Finland
Two standout examples of ABBâs sustainability efforts can be found in Santa Palomba, Italy, and Porvoo, Finland.
In Santa Palomba, the facility has installed solar photovoltaic shelters powering 17 EV charging stations.
ABBâs own building management software optimises the efficiency of HVAC systems, heat pumps and lighting, while the site has achieved zero production waste sent to landfill â aligning with the European Commissionâs Circular Economy Package.
Meanwhile, in Porvoo, ABB has shifted to recycled plastic for manufacturing junction boxes, cutting their carbon footprint by 40% and conserving 90 litres of water per unit.
The siteâs SAGA range of switches and sockets, made from bio-circular materials, is projected to save 400 tons of COâe annually by 2030 â equivalent to heating more than 42,000 electric saunas.
Collaboration as a catalyst for change
ABBâs approach is not confined to internal operations.
"Sustainability is a shared responsibility," Mike explains.
The Mission to Zero programme involves employees, customers and partners, fostering a collective effort to optimise, electrify and decarbonise operations worldwide.
By sharing its successes and methodologies, ABB aims to create a replicable model for industries and buildings globally.
This commitment to open collaboration ensures that lessons learned from one facility can be applied elsewhere, accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices.
ABB's push towards a sustainable future
ABBâs Mission to Zero is not just a corporate initiative; it is a practical demonstration of how businesses can lead the charge towards net zero emissions.
By combining cutting-edge technology with collaborative leadership and localised solutions, ABB is helping to reshape industrial operations for a more sustainable future.
As Mike puts it: "Weâre building a smarter, more sustainable world for generations to come."
If ABBâs progress is any indication, that world might be closer than we think.
"When we make our ABB operations more sustainable, we help our customers and partners reach their energy efficiency and emission reduction goals," he explains.
"Iâm proud of how our teams are increasingly embracing our Mission to Zero programme and sharing their knowledge to support othersâ sustainability journeys."
