Microsoft has been driving technological advancements for 50 years.

From revolutionising personal computing with MS-DOS and Windows to transforming gaming with the Xbox, advancing cloud computing and even artificial intelligence (AI) through Azure and Copilot, the company has played a major role in shaping how people use technology at home and work.

As part of its anniversary, Microsoft is focusing on the future, particularly the role AI will play in the next five decades.

This includes its AI for Good Open Call Programme, which aims to support projects across public health, education, sustainability and humanitarian causes.

The AI for Good Open Call Program will support projects that deliver measurable social impact

The initiative also reflects Microsoft's desire to give back to the Seattle area and its hometown of Redmond, Washington, where it has been based since the late 1970s.

Acknowledging the importance of local communities in its success, the company says: "We are committed to investing and honouring the people and organisations that make our region a centre of innovation and inclusion".

A platform for positive impact

The AI for Good Open Call Programme is run by Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab, a research initiative focused on using AI to tackle global and humanitarian challenges.

This programme welcomes nonprofit organisations, startups, researchers and businesses committed to creating positive social impact.

Eligible projects must demonstrate innovative AI-driven solutions for sustainability and human rights challenges, with the potential to scale and deploy using Microsoft’s Azure cloud services.

The programme offers a pool of US$5m in Azure credits, which will likely be divided among up to 20 projects.

Beyond Azure credits, selected participants gain access to Microsoft's researchers and data scientists, mentorship and training to develop and scale their ideas.

Juan M. Lavista Ferres, CVP and Chief Data Scientist at Microsoft

Discussing the initiative in a Microsoft blog, Chief Data Scientist Juan Lavista Ferres highlighted the previous work of the AI for Good Lab within the local community, and its track record of partnering with groups pioneering innovation in medical research, preserving biodiversity, supporting vulnerable communities and promoting local heritage and culture.

“As someone who’s worked at Microsoft and called Washington home for over a decade, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with extraordinary organisations making a difference across our state,” he said. “I’m eager to see even more innovative ways AI can be used for good in the place I’m proud to call home.”

Using AI to tackle global challenges

Established in 2018, Microsoft's AI for Good Lab develops technology designed to address some of humanity's most pressing challenges.

These include issues around food security, healthcare access, biodiversity loss and climate change.

The lab aligns its efforts with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, collaborating with key decision-makers by providing them with reliable and accurate data.

Examples of its work include mapping solar and wind installations and developing advanced tools that maximise solar energy efficiency.

In the Amazon, Microsoft uses satellite analysis to detect illegal deforestation, while AI tools help promote sustainable tourism by mapping and analysing tourist activity.

The lab has also developed predictive models that help curb malnutrition by identifying health risks in vulnerable populations.
