Hitachi strengthens its sustainability vision with science-based targets, driving decarbonisation, circularity and resilience across global operations

As global industries accelerate their climate commitments, Hitachi is advancing its sustainability leadership through bold environmental action.

The company has updated its long-term strategy, Hitachi Environmental Innovation 2050, to address urgent ecological and social challenges through innovation.

Anchored by the principles of decarbonisation, circular economy and nature positivity, the new vision sets ambitious science-based targets across Hitachi’s global operations.

Driving decarbonisation

Hitachi’s efforts are already delivering tangible results, including a major carbon neutrality achievement.

Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems has achieved a major sustainability milestone by reaching carbon neutrality across its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, reinforcing its role in driving industrial decarbonisation.

This achievement complements Hitachi Group's broader environmental ambition under its updated vision, Hitachi Environmental Innovation 2050.

"We are proud to achieve carbon neutrality (Scope 1 and 2)," says John Randall,President and CEO of Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems.

"This reflects our commitment to sustainability, not only in our operations but also in helping our customers improve their energy efficiency. We will continue to develop connected and sustainable industrial products and solutions to contribute to a more sustainable society."

The Group’s long-term strategy is now underpinned by three pillars:

  • Decarbonisation
  • Circular Economy
  • Nature Positive.

With this update, Hitachi has aligned its GHG reduction goals with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), in line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C threshold.

Targets aligned with innovation

By FY2050, Hitachi aims to reach net zero emissions across its entire value chain.

Near-term goals include an 83% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and a 52% reduction in Scope 3 emissions per billion JPY of sold products by FY2030.

These ambitions extend further, with 90% and 97% respective reductions in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by FY2050.

In line with its environmental roadmap, Hitachi will also:

  • Improve water and resource use through circular transformation, replacing its previous target of a 50% improvement with a broader aim of system-wide circularity

  • Cut 10% of water usage and achieve zero landfill waste by FY2030

  • Support ecosystem restoration and disaster resilience as part of its Nature Positive pillar.

Hitachi’s progress to date

In line with the company’s updated targets, Hitachi has already achieved 39% renewable energy globally, with a target of reaching 50% by the end of 2025.

Expanding its reduction aims, Hitachi is also aiming to reduce its water usage by 10% by 2030.

Also by 2030, the company is aiming for carbon neutrality at its own factories and offices, primarily through energy-saving equipment and procuring 100% renewable electricity.

Hitachi is investing in high-efficiency products, digitalisation, energy management systems and hydrogen-related technologies to help decarbonise not only its own operations but also those of its customers and partners.

Along with helping customers and partners, Hitachi is promoting the reuse and recycling of materials, extending product lifespans and aiming for zero landfill waste and eco-design for all relevant product groups by 2030.

Through targets, community and initiative, Hitachi is paving the way to reduced emissions, waste and energy, all in order to reach the ultimate goal of net zero.
