Can Hitachi's All-In-One Platform Kickstart EV Fleet Uptake?

Fleet operators across Europe are under increasing pressure to comply with upcoming zero-emission vehicle regulations, which mandate that all new vehicle sales must be emissions-free by 2035.
In response, Hitachi ZeroCarbon has introduced an all-encompassing electric fleet management platform, aimed at simplifying the often-complicated process of decarbonising vehicle fleets.
This newly launched platform provides an integrated solution that covers everything from strategic planning and EV financing to charging infrastructure and battery oversight ā making the transition to electric fleets more accessible for businesses.
Tackling the challenges of fleet electrification
With regulatory deadlines looming, Hitachi ZeroCarbonās platform has been developed to overcome the common obstacles that have historically hindered the switch to electric vehicles in commercial fleets.
The ZeroCarbon offering comprises four core services:
Strategy
Fleet
Charge
BatteryManager
Each element has been crafted to support fleet operators at various stages of their electrification process, recognising that the journey to net zero is rarely straightforward.
āWe understand that every business is unique, and has its own set of decarbonisation challenges, so weāre proud to have curated a service that threads the entire process together in one seamless offering,ā says Mike Nugent, Chief Revenue Officer at Hitachi ZeroCarbon.
āOur customers are telling us they donāt know where to start, and need support through every step of the journey.ā
Mike highlighted that the platformās people-centric design and financing options are integral to its value proposition.
āWe are experts at taking the complexity out of electrification and removing capital constraints, so operators can enjoy greater benefits, sooner,ā he says.
Grounded in practical experience
These solutions are informed by learnings from Optimise Prime, a large-scale commercial EV pilot involving over 8,000 electric vehicles.
By collaborating with leading UK fleets, distribution networks and tech partners, Hitachi shaped its offering around the realities of day-to-day operations ā such as managing battery life and working with existing infrastructure.
This foundation in hands-on experience is considered a major strength, especially for industries operating in high-pressure or variable environments.
The logistics sector is one such example, where fluctuating conditions and tight delivery windows are the norm.
Stig Tvergrov from Posten Bring, a logistics provider operating across Northern Europe, called Hitachiās technology a significant milestone in their electrification journey.
āWe operate in a challenging environment where the conditions can change dramatically based on season,ā Stig explains.
āHitachiās ZeroCarbonās end-to-end service ticked a lot of boxes, and through our deployment of ZeroCarbon Charge, we achieved complete visibility into the health and performance of our key battery assets.ā
Stig further explained that the system integrated effortlessly with their existing hardware and digital systems, ensuring smooth operations while providing deeper insight.
āIt led to us having complete visibility over both vehicles and chargers, allowing us to rely on new technology and help us towards achieving our climate goals early.ā
Global reach, tailored locally
Hitachi ZeroCarbonās managed services are already deployed across more than 1,000 electric vehicle assets in Europe, North America and Asia.
The company delivers round-the-clock monitoring, real-time notifications and expert incident support through a platform that can connect with any existing fleet technology.
Combining robust analytics with its substantial energy sector experience, the platform empowers fleet operators to make well-informed decisions on when and how to charge, how to manage battery resources and how to control costs.
Hitachi is also offering financial flexibility, with access to affordable finance and co-investment models for those seeking to expand without facing steep upfront expenses.
As deadlines draw closer and the urgency to decarbonise intensifies, Hitachiās unified platform could provide a crucial starting point for hesitant operators.
However, whether the promised integration and scalability can drive progress fast enough remains to be seen.
