Liverpool FC Launches World-First Carbon Negative Jersey

This year’s Premier League champion Liverpool FC has unveiled a commemorative jersey in partnership with American carbon capture company 1PointFive, marking two decades since its legendary Champions League triumph in Istanbul.
The special edition shirt is the world’s first carbon-neutral football jersey, with atmospheric CO₂ equal to its production footprint being removed through 1PointFive's Direct Air Capture technology.
The new shirt celebrates the club's famous comeback against AC Milan in 2005, which is widely considered one of the greatest football matches of all time, meaning that this jersey blends historical significance with environmental innovation.
Sustainable memorabilia
The collaboration addresses growing environmental concerns in sports merchandising by demonstrating how commemorative products can be created responsibly.
Each shirt will have its carbon footprint neutralised through advanced carbon capture technology.
"This shirt marks a world-first in football – and there's no better occasion to do it than the 20th anniversary of that iconic night in Istanbul," explains Lee Dwerryhouse, Senior Vice President of Merchandising at LFC.
"Through our pioneering collaboration with 1PointFive, we've created a truly special piece for our supporters.”
“Not only does it celebrate the past, but it also looks ahead to the future by supporting our sustainability goals. It's a collector's item that connects history with innovation."
The jersey features ‘European Champions, Istanbul 2005' embroidered in gold stitching with five stars beneath the Liver bird emblem.
Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia, who played a crucial role in the 2005 victory, modelled the commemorative shirt for its launch.
Industry leadership
The jersey initiative comes as part of Liverpool's broader sustainability strategy, The Red Way, a strategy which earned the club Sustainability Magazine’s ESG Strategy Award at Sustainability LIVE London 2024.
In March, the club announced its collaboration with 1PointFive, joining global corporations such as Microsoft, Amazon and Airbus in purchasing carbon dioxide removal credits.
"We're excited to collaborate with LFC, a team that continues to show their leadership on and off the field,” says Michael Avery, President and General Manager of 1PointFive.
“Our work together is a model for how organisations can use carbon removal technology to develop sustainable merchandise while engaging consumers in a new way."
The partnership represents a significant evolution in how sports memorabilia can be produced with environmental consciousness.
“This launch is a powerful example of how aligned, motivated partners can drive real innovation — delivering a solution that’s not only sustainable and transparent, but also commercially scalable,” says Amil Shah, Director at 1PointFive.
How 1PointFive's carbon capture works
1PointFive utilises Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology to physically remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere.
The company is currently developing what will be the world's largest DAC facility, designed to capture and permanently store CO₂ underground.
This process is generally considered to be one of the most stable and durable forms of carbon storage.
1PointFive's approach provides measurable, verifiable carbon removal credits that help businesses achieve climate targets, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors like aviation and maritime industries.
So far, the company has secured geological storage capacity to hold up to 6 billion tonnes of CO₂, which is benefitting organisations like Liverpool FC.
Market impact
This collaboration could establish a new standard for commemorative sports merchandise, particularly as consumers increasingly consider environmental factors in purchasing decisions.
While priced at a premium US$125 compared to standard replica jerseys, the carbon-neutral aspect offers added value to environmentally conscious supporters.
Industry analysts suggest the limited-edition shirt could influence how other clubs approach anniversary merchandise in future seasons.
The initiative demonstrates how carbon removal technologies can be integrated into consumer products beyond traditional sustainability approaches like recycled materials.
For Liverpool FC, the jersey serves dual purposes: honouring its storied European triumph while advancing its environmental commitments.
The club has not disclosed production numbers for the limited-edition item, though demand is expected to be substantial among collectors and environmentally-conscious supporters alike.
By combining nostalgia with forward-thinking environmental technology, Liverpool FC has created a commemorative product that resonates on multiple levels with its global fanbase.
