Neste & DHL Group: Decarbonising Deliveries with SAF

The transport sector, including logistics, contributes significantly to global carbon dioxide emissions, accounting for just over a third of the total.
To meet global net zero targets, the transport industry needs to reduce its emissions by around 20%, to less than 6 gigatonnes by 2030.
DHL Group and Neste have announced an expansion of their collaboration to reduce emissions in logistics.
The two companies will jointly evaluate how Neste's renewable solutions, including renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), can support DHL in achieving its ambitious decarbonisation targets for air and road transportation.
Under this new agreement, DHL Group aims to gradually increase its off-take of neat SAF from Neste to around 300,000 tons per year by 2030.
This commitment will play a crucial role in helping DHL reach its goal of increasing the share of sustainable fuels across all transportation modes to more than 30% by 2030.
βThe signing of this agreement with Neste is a significant step in our strategy to achieve net zero emission logistics by 2050,β says Yin Zou, EVP Corporate Development at DHL Group.
βBy closely collaborating with a leading producer of renewable fuels, we can further advance on our interim targets. Together with Neste, we will develop innovative solutions that support our own sustainability goals and eventually also those of our customers.β
Additionally, the partnership will explore the use of renewable diesel to support DHL's decarbonisation efforts in road transportation.
Meet Neste
Neste, a global leader in sustainability innovation, has been at the forefront of developing renewable and circular solutions.
The company is the world's largest producer of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.
Neste's commitment to sustainability extends beyond fuel production, as it aims to transform its Porvoo refinery in Finland into Europe's most sustainable refinery by 2035.
This aligns with its broader goal of achieving carbon-neutral production by 2035 and supporting customers in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tons of CO2e annually by 2035.
About DHL Group
DHL Group is a global logistics powerhouse, operating in more than 220 countries and territories with approximately 594,000 employees worldwide.
As the world's leading logistics company, DHL Group generated revenue of around β¬82bn (US$85bn) in 2023.
The company has set ambitious sustainability targets, including achieving net zero greenhouse gas emission logistics by 2050.
Interim goals for 2030 include electrifying two-thirds of last-mile delivery vehicles and increasing the use of sustainable fuels across all transportation modes.
How Neste and DHL Group are working together
The partnership between DHL Group and Neste represents a significant step towards more sustainable logistics operations.
The companies have already been working together successfully for several years, particularly in the field of sustainable aviation fuel deliveries.
They have also supported the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) in pioneering and testing the ISCC Credit Transfer System, which enables airlines, logistics providers and end customers to credibly report emission reductions achieved using SAF.
By combining DHL's extensive global network and logistics expertise with Neste's advanced renewable fuel solutions, the two companies are setting a new standard for sustainable transportation.
Carl Nyberg, Senior Vice President, Commercial, Renewable Products at Neste, says: “We are looking forward to further strengthening our existing cooperation with DHL Group through a holistic, joint approach to tackling GHG emissions in transportation.
“This gives us a chance to support DHL as a frontrunner in its field with our renewable fuels, which provide a solution to reduce GHG emissions on the road as well as in the air.”
