Aligning innovation with sustainability goals

HP’s environmental progress aligns with its long-term goals.

From a 2019 baseline, CO₂e emissions from product use are down 46%, now accounting for just 25% of total emissions.

Its sustainability strategy hinges on value chain transformation, product circularity and digital inclusion.

"We are helping companies utilise innovative technology as more than a productivity tool but a fulfillment platform, grounded in our belief that technology can help companies deliver growth and fulfillment," says Enrique Lore, President and CEO of HP.

"At the same time, we are transforming our value chain to embed sustainability and strengthen resilience across our global operations and supply chain.

"Together, these efforts are driving meaningful change–empowering people, strengthening systems and opening doors to a more inclusive sustainable future of work.

"As we look ahead, we will continue to build on this momentum, committed to a future that delivers opportunity, purpose and resilience for everyone."

HP continues to receive external recognition for its sustainability leadership. It ranks in the top 1% of companies for social and environmental performance by EcoVadis (15 years running), is a six-time honouree for ethical business practices and received the 2024 North America Company of the Year award for circular economy progress.

Circular design and low-emission operations

The 2024 report details how HP is reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Since 2019, operational greenhouse gas emissions are down 41%, achieved through efficiency upgrades and renewable energy adoption.

As of 2024, all HP operations in the United States are powered by 100% renewable electricity.

"Since 2019, we’ve achieved a 41% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 operational greenhouse gas emissions, driven by improved energy efficiency and increased adoption of renewable electricity," says Grant Hoffman, Senior Vice President of Operations and Portfolio at HP Solutions.

"In 2024, 100% renewable electricity powered all HP operations in the US."

Globally, HP is on track to meet its target of a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, with a 41% reduction already achieved.

Its broader goal to cut value chain (Scope 3) emissions by 50% by 2030 has also seen early progress, with a 27% reduction reported by the end of 2024.

To support these goals, HP designs with circularity in mind.

Since 2019, the company has incorporated more than 4 billion pounds of reused, recycled or renewable materials into its products and packaging.

It aims to reach 75% product and packaging circularity by 2030, currently standing at 43%.

The report highlights material recovery innovations such as sourcing ocean-bound plastics, including discarded fishing nets, to manufacture devices like the

HP EliteBook 1040 G11. HP also refurbishes devices through its IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) service, 85% of collected devices are reconditioned for reuse.

The HP HOPE programme (HP Organisation for Partnership and Equity) has supplied more than 40,000 young people with refurbished devices, promoting both digital inclusion and circularity.

Grant adds: "Every milestone we achieve in sustainability is a reminder of what’s possible when innovation meets responsibility.

"The newly released HP 2024 Sustainable Impact Report shows our progress toward building a cleaner, more circular future.

"Solutions such as HP HOPE and our circular services are keeping technology in use longer, reducing e-waste while helping close the digital divide.

"Sustainability isn’t just a box to check off for us. It’s embedded into our ethos, impacting how we design, produce and partner for impact.

"Together with our customers and suppliers, we’re accelerating toward our 2030 and 2040 goals."

A resilient, ethical supply chain model

HP’s sustainability efforts are integrated across its global operations, from product design to end-of-life services.

These initiatives form a resilient supply chain model that prioritises ethical sourcing, carbon reduction and access to technology.

The company’s Digital Equity Accelerator alone has reached more than 9.1 million people in nine countries since 2022, helping underserved youth gain digital skills.

Collaborations with community organisations like the YMCA have enabled the delivery of AI and digital tools to new users.

With each sustainability report, HP demonstrates how a global technology company can embed sustainability into every level of its strategy, from powering facilities with renewable electricity to delivering second-life tech to students.

As it moves toward 2030, HP aims to deepen its circular design commitments, lower emissions and strengthen social equity through technology.

Its 2024 Sustainable Impact Report reinforces the case for tech firms to be agents of both innovation and environmental responsibility, shaping a future where growth and sustainability are fully aligned.
