Google has invested billions in Texas to expand cloud and AI infrastructure while linking new campuses with large scale energy and workforce programmes

Google has revealed plans for a substantial data centre expansion programme throughout Texas, confirming US$40bn in spending commitments extending to 2027.

The initiative focuses on delivering cloud computing and AI capabilities whilst establishing firm connections between energy provision and skills development.

The spending package encompasses three new data centre facilities across campuses in Armstrong and Haskell Counties, alongside expansion work at Google's established data centre campus locations in Ellis County.

Google's multi-site expansion

Google has maintained a presence in Texas for more than 15 years and states that this latest commitment underpins a multi-location data centre strategy.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, characterises the development as "a significant expansion of our commitment to the Lone Star State", in a post on LinkedIn.

"AI is poised to accelerate a new golden age of American innovation and Texas – with its optimism and talent – is leading the way," Sundar explains.

"To power this progress, we must invest in world-leading infrastructure and the people who build it. That's why we are investing more than US$40bn in Texas through 2027 to expand our Cloud and AI infrastructure."

Google confirms that the Armstrong and Haskell Counties developments complement ongoing expansion activity in Ellis County, with each site configured to handle forthcoming Search, Maps and AI processing demands.

Every facility contributes to a broader cloud region architecture that integrates capacity planning, network connectivity and energy infrastructure within a unified programme.

"We've proudly called Texas home for over 15 years, from our offices and existing data centres, to Waymo in Austin, to Wing deliveries in the Dallas-Fort Worth area," Sundar says.

"Thank you to Governor Greg Abbott for your partnership to drive economic development and innovation – we look forward to Texas being a vital engine that powers the opportunities AI will create for years to come."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott adds: "This is a Texas-sized investment in the future of our great state. Texas is the epicentre of AI development, where companies can pair innovation with expanding energy.

"Google's US$40bn investment makes Texas Google's largest investment in any state in the country and supports energy efficiency and workforce development in our state.

"We must ensure that America remains at the forefront of the AI revolution and Texas is the place where that can happen."

Synchronising development with energy investments

Google confirms that its Texan expansion operates on the principle that additional energy resources are delivered to the grid in tandem with new data centre capacity deployment.

The organisation will assume full financial responsibility for costs associated with its operations whilst backing broader energy efficiency initiatives across local communities.

The organisation has established a new US$30m Energy Impact Fund designed to accelerate and expand community energy initiatives.

This accompanies more than 6,200 MW of fresh energy generation and capacity secured via power purchase agreements with energy suppliers.

One Haskell County data centre facility will be positioned adjacent to a solar and battery storage installation, with this colocation arrangement intended to enhance daily operations and electrical stability.

Google confirms that energy availability, grid reliability and financial discipline underpin the planning framework for its Texan campus developments.

This encompasses remote renewable installations, storage capabilities and extended-term contracts that guarantee capacity for cloud computing and AI services at substantial scale.

Inside Google's workforce programmes

Google presents its workforce strategy as integral to the construction timetable. The electrical training ALLIANCE will collaborate with the organisation to train current electrical workers and more than 1,700 apprentices across Texas by 2030.

Google maintains that this represents more than double the anticipated pipeline of new electricians within the state.

The organisation emphasises that large-scale electrical training sits at the heart of its Texan infrastructure strategy, given that data centre construction requires specialist expertise in high voltage systems, facility installation and onsite commissioning work.

Google financial support enables the programme to ensure state workforce capacity expands proportionately with the region's cloud computing and AI presence.
