How is BDO USA Advancing its Sustainability Strategies?

BDO's 2024 Sustainability Report reveals a business deeply committed to responsible growth, employee wellbeing and climate action.
With sustainability embedded in its strategy and culture, the firm is aligning operational practices with long-term impact goals.
From decarbonisation efforts to inclusive workplace initiatives, BDO is shaping a more resilient future for its people, clients and communities.
BDO’s strategic framework
BDO is taking decisive steps to redefine what sustainable business looks like in professional services.
BDO’s approach is shaped by its strategic plan known as CLIMB, which integrates sustainability into a broader framework of quality, investment, growth and stewardship.
The firm’s 2024 Sustainability Report outlines a maturing strategy rooted in measurable action, social impact and a strong sense of collective purpose.
“As we forge ahead on our journey, we remain driven by our core purpose and our commitment to fostering an ownership mindset,” says Wayne Berson, CEO of BDO USA.
“Together, it is our responsibility and privilege to help our colleagues, clients and communities thrive”.
At its core lies a commitment to long-term resilience, not just in terms of business continuity but also in community development and environmental responsibility.
In 2024, BDO launched a comprehensive decarbonisation strategy aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), targeting a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.
The strategy includes firmwide programmes in responsible sourcing, sustainable office design and climate-resilient operations.
Cultural stewardship and employee engagement
Sustainability at BDO extends beyond carbon reductions.
The firm views its people as the bedrock of impact.
In 2024, it achieved an 86% Employee Engagement Index, hosted 340 inclusion events and mobilised nearly 23,000 volunteer hours across the United States.
BDO’s ownership culture, supported by its Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), fosters a shared sense of responsibility and empowerment.
The company also places emphasis on accessibility, flexible working, equitable pay and inclusive professional development, recognising these as critical drivers of both sustainability and employee wellbeing.
“I'm proud of the work we're doing, and lucky to work alongside so many wonderful people within the organisation who also believe sustainable business is responsible business,” writes Cara Mooses, Senior Director, Corporate Sustainability Strategy Leader at BDO USA, on LinkedIn.
Resilience across the value chain
With more than half of BDO’s emissions linked to its supply chain, the firm launched a Responsible Sourcing Programme in 2024, requiring key suppliers to disclose environmental and human rights practices.
It also introduced emissions data visibility into its travel booking systems, nudging professionals towards more sustainable choices when travelling for business.
Sustainability has also been woven into office decisions.
In 2024, 59% of BDO office spaces were located in LEED, WELL or ENERGY STAR-certified buildings, with material choices guided by low-VOC, recycled or circular design principles.
Empowering the next generation
Community impact is another cornerstone of BDO’s ESG strategy.
The selection of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as its first national non-profit cause partner marked a significant milestone.
This three-year commitment aligns with BDO’s “Children & Youth” cause area and focuses on long-term mentorship, career support and economic empowerment for young people.
In total, BDO donated US$3.1m to charitable and community organisations in 2024 alone.
BDO's 2024 sustainability agenda illustrates the firm’s belief that responsibility and profitability can and must, go hand in hand.
With accountability embedded in its governance, measurable environmental targets and a culture of care, BDO exemplifies how values-based leadership can catalyse real-world change.
