Inside LCAW’s Nature-Based Solutions Summit Discussion

The 20 to 28 June marks London Climate Action Week (LCAW), a global call for accelerating climate action, protecting ecosystems and supporting decarbonisation delivery.
Sustainability LIVE @ London Climate Action Week - The Leadership Summit, in association with Philip Morris International, is a one-day event aimed for senior sustainability executives who are at the forefront of climate action strategy.
An important message running throughout LCAW is nature-based solutions and can they mitigate ecosystem loss and help the world adapt to climate change.
What are nature based solutions?
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) defines nature-based solutions as actions that protect, sustainably manage and restore natural and modified ecosystems while addressing societal and environmental challenges.
Nature-based solutions are increasingly recognised as a critical component of global sustainability strategies, with the potential to contribute significantly towards achieving net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050 alongside wider decarbonisation efforts.
High-integrity nature-based solutions projects could mitigate up to 10 gigatonnes of CO₂ annually, equivalent to approximately 27% of current global emissions.
In addition to climate mitigation, investments in nature-based solutions can help to support biodiversity conservation, strengthen ecosystem resilience and reduce financial risks associated with climate change and nature loss.
Despite the World Economic Forum identifying biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse as one of the top global risks over the next decade, a major financing gap of approximately US$700bn per year remains.
According to UNEP’s State of Finance for Nature Report, private finance currently accounts for only 17% of total nature-based solutions investment, highlighting the urgent need for greater private sector participation to increase annual investments from US$154bn to the US$384bn required by 2025.
Sustainability LIVE at LCAW
Shell is demonstrating growing engagement with sustainability and nature-based solutions through initiatives such as its Nature-Based Solutions Summit announcement.
The company is sponsoring The Nature-Based Solutions Summit panel discussion at Sustainability LIVE @ LCAW - The Leadership Summit.
The panel session is set to explore how businesses are integrating biodiversity restoration, carbon sequestration and ecosystem protection into sustainability initiatives.
The company recognises the importance of integrating natural climate solutions into broader decarbonisation and environmental strategies, particularly in supporting carbon reduction, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity protection.
With more than 250 in-person attendees, the conference provides the insights, connections and solutions required to accelerate progress toward net zero while navigating a rapidly changing sustainability landscape shaped by regulation, innovation and global policy shifts.
Featuring 25 expert speakers and four interactive executive workshops, the programme delivers practical guidance and strategic perspective on embedding climate action across operations, supply chains and investment decisions.
Nature-based solutions summit
Nature-based solutions are gaining momentum as a critical lever for climate mitigation and adaptation.
Joining the panel discussion is Janneke Abels, VP Nature Based Solutions at Shell.
Janneke provides years of decarbonisation, low carbon and nature-based solutions knowledge.
On her LinkedIn, she writes that she is “passionate about creating businesses where people and planet benefit.”
More speakers are set to be joining Janneke and diving into the topic of how nature can be protected and enhanced in today's climate.
