What is water positivity?

According to the United Nations (UN), approximately 2.2 billion people globally lack access to safe drinking water.

More than 4.2 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation facilities.

“By 2050, global water demand is expected to increase by 55%, with agriculture accounting for the majority of this increase,” says the UN.

By definition, according to the UN, a company is defined as water positive when its water mass balance is positive in respect to the difference between the generation of purified water and the direct or indirect consumption of fresh water to produce goods or services.

According to the Water Positive Team, there are several approaches to achieve the goal of water positivity.

The team proposes the purification of water through multi-barrier systems can create a sustainable water source, with a level of purity exceeding that which is currently found in nature.

“This balance, rooted in the calculation of the water footprint, takes into account various factors: from water footprint to water footprint trade, local water scarcity, social impact, economic and environmental concerns.” says Water Positive.
