JLR Joins ResponsibleGlass to Cut CO₂, Increase Circularity

JLR is supporting ResponsibleGlass, a global standard advancing emissions transparency, responsible sourcing and circularity across the glass industry

Glass plays a vital role in modern life, from buildings and vehicles to solar panels and advanced technologies.

Annually, glass manufacturing generates 95 million tonnes of CO₂.

ResponsibleGlass (RG) understands that glass doesn’t yet operate with sustainability initiatives and frameworks, making emission monitoring and mitigation difficult.

What is ResponsibleGlass?

RG is a global multi-stakeholder sustainability standards programme for glass.

The aim of this programme is to bring together the value chain, including:

  • Raw material suppliers
  • Manufacturers
  • Brands
  • Automotive
  • Construction
  • Recycling and re-use
  • Architects and specifiers
  • Civil society.

RG is a not-for-profit organisation that was established in 2025, aiming to create a common global framework for glass production.

  • ERM CVS.

With 23 founding members and supporters and more than 150,000 employees, together they represent approximately US$90bn in annual revenue.

“The publication of this first ResponsibleGlass Draft Standard is an important milestone in changing that.

“ResponsibleGlass brings together the entire value chain, from raw material producers and glassmakers to customers, sustainability experts and civil society organisations, to develop a shared definition of what responsible glassmaking should look like. 

“But a standard is only as strong as the consensus behind it. why we're now inviting the wider industry, customers, policymakers and civil society to help us build a trusted global benchmark for responsible glassmaking.

“Our ambition is to create a trusted benchmark for the industry that accelerates progress on sustainability, drives transparency and helps maximise the positive contribution glass can make to a more sustainable society."

The importance of responsible glass

RG comes into place due to the increasing pressure to act on emissions.

Regulations like the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive are pushing companies to back up claims with verified data rather than self-reporting.

The aim is to improve responsible sourcing, environmental performance and circularity.

RG has released its first draft standard, incorporating six core ideas.

Management systems

The aim is to ensure companies have the policies and reporting systems needed to manage sustainability performance effectively.

Responsible business practice

This will aim to include legal compliance, anti-corruption measures, stakeholder engagement, transparency and public reporting of sustainability data.

Responsible sourcing

Responsible sourcing will require companies to understand and assess the environmental and social impacts of raw materials, recycled materials and energy sources used in the manufacturing of glass.

The aim is to promote supply chain transparency, ranging from silica sand and soda ash through to recovered glass and energy inputs.

“It’s not only the right thing to do, but it also improves profitability and increases supply chain resilience. 

“Through these initiatives, JLR advocates that sustainable choices are not always more expensive, they can help reduce costs and even become opportunities for the growth and development of our colleagues.” 

Environmental performance

This is set to cover GHG emissions, energy use, water stewardship, biodiversity, waste management, air emissions and pollution.

Companies will be expected to measure, manage and disclose performance against key sustainability metrics.

People and communities

This will aim to involve worker health and safety, labour and human rights and engagement with local communities.

Circularity and sustainable design

This initiative is set to encourage the use of recycled materials, improved recycling and recovery rates and the development of glass products designed to reduce environmental impacts.

“We are the world's largest producer of soda ash, a key component of glassmaking and we've always believed that responsible sourcing upstream matters just as much as what happens downstream. 

“Soda ash is a critical raw material for glass and so its sustainability credentials must be considered. Natural soda ash has a significantly lower carbon and water footprint than the synthetic alternatives. 

“A global standard is a credible way for those credentials to be valued by the whole supply chain, right down to the end user. We were glad to be a founding member of ResponsibleGlass and this first draft is a significant milestone for the glass industry.” 

JLR’s sustainable push

JLR is making circularity a core pillar of its sustainability strategy by redesigning vehicles, materials and manufacturing processes to keep resources in use for as long as possible. 

Through its Circularity Lab in Gaydon, the company disassembles vehicles to identify barriers to reuse and recycling, feeding those insights into future vehicle development and working closely with suppliers to create scalable closed-loop solutions. 

Its collaboration with Dow and Adient has delivered the automotive industry's first closed-loop recycled polyurethane seat foam, returning material from end-of-life vehicles into new luxury seats and reducing CO₂ emissions by more than 44kg per seat. 

JLR is also advancing circularity through its Cornerstone concept, which incorporates dozens of lower-impact components developed with more than 40 supply chain partners, including recycled glass, lower-emission steel, repairable headlamps and speaker magnets made from 95% recycled materials.

Beyond vehicle components, the company is reusing production equipment across manufacturing sites, expanding closed-loop aluminium recycling, developing digital asset management systems to maximise reuse and designing future vehicles for easier repair, disassembly and material recovery, strengthening both supply chain resilience and resource efficiency.
