Who is DP World's New Sustainability Leader for Europe?

After four years at the helm of commercial and supply chain strategy for DP World in the UK, John Trenchard is moving to a new role that aligns closely with the broader sustainability goals of the organisation.
From July 2025, John will take the position of Vice President for Sustainable International Supply Chains in Europe.
This step mirrors DP World’s strategic pivot towards enhancing sustainable supply chain solutions across the continent.
John announced his transition on LinkedIn, saying: “After four very enjoyable years with DP World in the UK, it's time to embark on the next adventure...
"In this new position, my focus will be on exploring, developing and offering customers an expanded range of more sustainable options for their international supply chains in the European Region. The journey ahead looks incredibly exciting!”
From UK Ports to Cross-Border Logistics
John's previous duties were heavily tied to DP World’s operations in the UK, particularly focusing on the strategic choices around the London Gateway and Southampton terminals.
These ports are crucial, handling nearly half of the UK's container traffic and facilitating approximately US$57.8bn in goods traded beyond the EU annually.
DP World UK’s operational model is port-centric, optimising the quick delivery of goods to the UK and Europe by positioning them closer to the final destinations.
While John's efforts in the UK included robust sustainability targets like achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and implementing electrified infrastructure, his new European role aims to extend beyond geographical confines.
Nicholas Mazzei, Vice President of Sustainability at DP World, applauded the appointment on LinkedIn: “In a very exciting move for us, John Trenchard is moving from his UK P&T commercial role into being our commercial leader for sustainability across the whole European region.
"John is able to sell sustainable products better than anyone and being able to combine our sustainability goals with our commercial goals are key. If you want to make your supply chain more sustainable and are looking for an end to end supply chain business to help, reach out to John!”
The Sustainable International Supply Chains division in Region Europe aims to interweave sustainability into full trade routes, employing technologies like hydrogen-powered trucks, dual-fuel vessels and electrified fleets. It also tailors approaches to adhere to diverse regulatory landscapes and infrastructure across the continent.
Unlike the UK operation, which is concentrated in specific locations, the European division is structured to impact the movement of goods across boundaries, integrating sustainability within multimodal networks and customer operations.
These initiatives feed into DP World’s expansive “Our World, Our Future” programme, emphasising significant reductions in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions globally.
What's next for John and DP World?
John’s prominence on the global sustainability platform is also evident through his participation in pivotal conferences.
During Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE: Sustainability 2025, he delivered a keynote speech highlighting the logistics sector's dual role in both generating and reducing carbon emissions.
“We are probably part of the problem,” he said, “but hopefully, we can be part of the solution as well.”
He highlighted that supply chains contribute 10–12% of global CO₂ emissions, with maritime shipping accounting for 2–3%.
In his presentation, John detailed specific measures in the UK, including modal shift incentives urging rail over road freight. These initiatives have already achieved a reduction of more than 25,000 tonnes of CO₂, reducing more than eight million truck miles from UK roads since 2023.
John also explained DP World’s carbon inset programme, enabling cargo owners to cut Scope 3 emissions while their goods are docked.
He suggested that if half of DP World's customers participated, “we could remove 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ immediately this year".
New stage, same commitment
DP World’s financial strength remains robust, posting US$20bn in revenue for 2024, alongside a 15% emission reduction since 2022.
With 65% of its electricity sourced from renewables, and with climate targets certified by the Science Based Targets initiative, sustainability is deeply woven into its network of 50,000 professionals, spanning six continents.
The company will feature as a sponsor at Sustainability LIVE London in September, shortlisted for the Sustainable Finance Award and the Net Zero Award at the Global Sustainability Awards.
