Walmart has joined the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, marking a significant advancement in the retail sector's commitment to environmental responsibility and regenerative agricultural practices. The move demonstrates how large-scale retailers are increasingly prioritising measurable sustainability outcomes over conventional sourcing methods.

The U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol operates as a voluntary sustainability programme for US cotton growers and functions as a traceability platform for all US cotton. Its existing members include Carhartt, Ralph Lauren, Levi Strauss & Co, Macy's and Adidas, creating a coalition of major brands committed to transparent environmental practices.

The programme brings quantifiable and verifiable goals and measurements to responsible cotton production, driving continuous improvement across six critical sustainability areas: land use efficiency, water use efficiency, energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, soil conservation and soil carbon. These metrics align with regenerative agriculture principles that prioritise ecosystem restoration alongside production.

Data-driven transparency and verification

The Trust Protocol's foundation rests on sophisticated data collection and independent third-party verification, ensuring environmental claims are substantiated rather than aspirational. This level of transparency addresses growing concerns about greenwashing in the fashion and retail industries.

Walmart's membership marks an important moment for sustainable sourcing practices, significantly scaling the environmental impact of responsible cotton production. The company's focus on regeneration and supply chain transparency reflects broader industry recognition that environmental stewardship and business success are increasingly interdependent.

As a people-led, tech-powered omnichannel retailer, Walmart serves approximately 280 million customers and members weekly across more than 10,900 stores and numerous ecommerce websites in 19 countries. The scale of operations makes the retailer's sourcing decisions particularly significant for environmental outcomes.

With fiscal year 2025 revenue of US$713bn and approximately 2.1 million associates worldwide, the company's sourcing decisions carry substantial environmental implications. This financial scale underscores the potential impact of Walmart's commitment to sustainable cotton sourcing.

Verifiable sustainability goals drive impact

Through Trust Protocol membership, Walmart will gain access to aggregated, verifiable data on sustainability practices from US cotton growers. The company can track the movement of US cotton and Protocol cotton throughout its supply chain, enabling verification of environmental claims.

This traceability enables the company to verify environmental claims and measure progress against specific targets. The data-driven approach provides accountability and transparency throughout the sourcing process.

Walmart has articulated clear sustainability ambitions, seeking to source more sustainable cotton whilst pursuing its broader goal to help more sustainably manage, protect and restore at least 50 million acres of land and one million square miles of ocean by 2030. These commitments reflect recognition that regenerative practices must extend across entire ecosystems rather than isolated production sites.

"At Walmart, we are committed to providing our customers with quality products that are not only affordable but also produced in a way that is responsible and sustainable," says Jerome Del Porto, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Walmart. "Joining the US Cotton Trust Protocol is another step in our journey to continue driving meaningful change within our own supply chain and the industry at large."

Regenerative agriculture gains momentum

Since 2020, the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol has operated as a voluntary, science-based sustainability initiative and traceability platform designed to provide quantifiable goals for the industry. By aggregating field-level data across six critical metrics, including land use, soil health and greenhouse gas emissions, the programme ensures all progress is independently verified for accuracy.

This sophisticated approach to data collection and full supply chain transparency offers major retailers the essential assurances required to confidently source cotton grown using practices that could regenerate soil, sequester carbon and reduce environmental impact. The emphasis on soil health particularly aligns with the emerging understanding that healthy soils are fundamental to climate resilience and biodiversity preservation.

"We welcome Walmart to the Trust Protocol, recognising the reach and influence their membership will extend in advancing sustainable cotton sourcing practices," adds Gary Adams, President of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol. "This collaboration directly strengthens our mission to drive continuous improvement and foster greater transparency in the supply chain."

The partnership demonstrates how transparency, verification and regenerative practices are becoming essential components of responsible sourcing strategies rather than optional enhancements.
