BYD Energy Storage and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) have signed a contract to deliver the world’s largest grid-scale energy storage project totalling 12.5GWh. 

This milestone supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which targets 50% renewable energy in the national mix by the end of the decade.

A milestone in global energy storage

BYD Energy Storage and SEC have signed a landmark contract for what is now the world’s largest grid-scale energy storage project, with an initial capacity of 12.5GWh. 

Combined with a previously delivered 2.6GWh project, the total collaboration has reached a record-breaking 15.1GWh.

The collaboration marks a milestone that underscores the long-term commitment to Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy ambitions and signals a transformative moment in the global energy storage sector.

This agreement and partnership not only demonstrates the scale and ambition of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, but also sets a new benchmark for international cooperation on energy transition initiatives.

BYD described the signing as “a solid and crucial step forward in their collaboration in the renewable energy sector, injecting strong momentum into the development of Saudi Arabia's renewable energy industry.”

Supporting Saudi’s renewable energy vision

Central to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 is its energy transition strategy, which includes achieving an optimal energy mix.

Saudi’s optimal mix involves renewables accounting for 50% of electricity generation by the end of the decade.

The new energy storage systems will be installed across five locations in the Kingdom and fully integrated into the national power transmission network.

The battery energy storage systems (BESS) provided by BYD will use its new-generation MC Cube-T ESS and its pioneering Cell-to-System (CTS) integration technology.

The advanced tech will deliver a Vcts index of more than 33% – a measure of how efficiently cell volume is utilised within the system. 

These systems are engineered to ensure stability in power supply, balance peak demand and enhance grid resilience in the face of increasing renewable energy inputs.

With 17 years of innovation in the energy storage sector, BYD has delivered more than 75GWh of BESS equipment to more than 350 projects in 110 countries and regions.

This cooperation with BYD Energy Storage demonstrates SEC's determination to introduce advanced energy storage technologies.

The signing marks an enhancement in Saudi Arabia's energy utilisation efficiency and promotes leapfrog development in the renewable energy sector, the partners said in a joint statement.

It reflects growing market confidence in BYD’s technological edge and its ability to deliver and support massive infrastructure projects globally.
