Aramco and BYD join forces to advance cleaner, more efficient EV technologies, blending fuels expertise with EV innovation for sustainable transportation

While electric vehicles (EVs) have lower operational emissions than traditional vehicles, the manufacturing of EVs can be more energy-intensive than that of gasoline-powered cars.

In response to this, Aramco and BYD have announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate innovation in new energy vehicle (NEV) technologies.

The agreement, signed by Saudi Aramco Technologies Company (SATC), a subsidiary of Aramco, aims to combine research and development capabilities to develop solutions that deliver both environmental and efficiency gains.

Collaborating for the climate

This collaborative agreement reflects a growing trend among major players in the energy and automotive sectors to align on decarbonisation goals.

The collaboration is designed to tap into the strengths of each partner; Aramco’s long-standing expertise in fuels and powertrains and BYD’s leadership in EVs and battery technology.

“The collaboration between SATC and BYD aims to support improvements and it builds on Aramco’s extensive research and development of new energy solutions,” says Ali A. Al-Meshari, Aramco’s Senior Vice President of Technology Oversight and Coordination.

“Aramco is exploring a number of ways to potentially optimise transport efficiency, from innovative lower-carbon fuels to advanced powertrain concepts.

“This work stems from our belief that multiple approaches are necessary to support a practical energy transition and we are delighted to collaborate with BYD on this journey.”

Next-generation transport solutions

The Aramco-BYD partnership will focus on a range of joint initiatives.

One is advanced R&D projects through combining BYD’s EV and battery innovations with Aramco’s fuel and materials engineering to develop cutting-edge NEVs.

The partnership will oversee an increase in climate-adaptive technologies by developing batteries and vehicles suited to Saudi Arabia’s high-heat environment, whilst also addressing infrastructure limitations such as EV charging.

The aim of the collaboration is to install low-carbon transport systems alongside creating powertrain systems and fuels designed to reduce emissions across the transport sector.

BYD, widely recognised for its commitment to clean mobility, brings a range of expertise to the table.

The company manufactures electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles designed to displace traditional combustion-engine cars and reduce emissions across transport systems globally.

BYD has also developed the Blade Battery, a technology lauded for its high safety standards and ability to perform reliably in extreme temperatures.

“At the crossroads of technological innovation and environmental protection, BYD always believes that true breakthroughs come from openness and collaboration,” says Luo Hongbin, Senior Vice President of BYD.

“We expect that SATC and our cutting-edge R&D capabilities in new energy vehicles will break the boundaries of geography and mindset to incubate solutions that combine highly-efficient performance with a lower carbon footprint.

“We are confident that this will support the world’s efforts to address the climate challenge.”

The EV vision

The partnership aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aiming to transform the region into a global hub for innovation and sustainability.

A key goal is for EVs to comprise 30% of Riyadh’s vehicle fleet by 2030, up from just 1% in 2024.

Aramco is enabling this shift by investing in lower-carbon fuels, hybrid systems and lightweight materials that enhance transport efficiency.

The collaboration also holds promise for economic diversification and job creation.

As both companies invest in advanced vehicle and fuel technologies, the initiative is expected to support new opportunities in research, engineering and clean energy production.
