RWE: Bringing Clean Energy to the US, From Coast to Coast
The energy company RWE is targeting new milestones after hitting 10 GW of installed generation capacity of renewable energy storage facilities across the US.
The company owns and operates a portfolio of more than 170 facilities in 24 US states, including 4.3 GW of solar, 5.2 GW of onshore wind and 0.5 GW of battery storage.
RWE also has more than 4 GW of clean energy projects under construction in the US.
Andrew Flanagan, CEO, RWE Clean Energy, said: “By working with top tier suppliers, partnering with local communities and empowering employees, RWE is generating impact across America with clean, domestically produced electricity.
“We’re fuelling economic growth, creating new jobs and providing millions in tax revenues and additional financial benefits to our partners in the community, while also enhancing national energy security.”
Powerful bullets
In a series of slides, RWE summarised its impact:
- 10 GW of energy is enough to provide electricity to 8.1 million average-sized American homes each year
- Direct job creation and economic growth
- Millions of dollars in lease payments to local landowners
- Local revenue for schools, roads and more
- Community giving to local organisations and nonprofits.
RWE said: “We are present in a majority of US states and continue to rapidly scale our US operating portfolio to deliver on our promise of providing cost-competitive, reliable energy that is also creating economic growth and opportunity in communities across the country.”
Meeting growing energy demand
In 2024, RWE commissioned new onshore wind, solar and battery storage facilities with a total combined generation capacity of 953 MW.
It brought online six projects across five states.
The work is helping to meet the growing energy demand driven by artificial intelligence, data centres and American manufacturing.
RWE said: “In addition, we collaborate closely with local communities as we develop projects across the US.
“This includes continuous engagement with communities, providing funding for local organisations and nonprofits, supporting landowners and contributing property tax income to local municipalities that helps pay for new infrastructure, emergency responders, school funding and more.”
Two of the new
The recently-commissioned solar projects from RWE include:
- Northern Orchard, which is located in Kern County, California, and has an installed capacity of 150 MWac solar energy, with a co-located 92 MW (368 MWh) battery energy storage which will be commissioned during the upcoming months
- Timberland Solar: a 140 MWac solar farm in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.
Together, the two solar farms can generate enough electricity to power 51,000 average US homes annually.
RWE said: “With now more than 170 operational facilities across 24 states, we’re solidifying our position as one of the country’s top renewable energy providers.
“RWE is building America’s clean energy future while strengthening the communities we serve.”
Andrew added: “We are growing further: RWE has more than 4 GW of clean energy projects under construction in the US and hundreds more under development across the country as we seek to invest US$20bn+ in the US by 2030.
“Thank you to our incredible partners, and the communities that help make this progress possible.”
