Marriott doubles down on DEI, declaring that inclusion is non-negotiable amid rising political pushback, reinforcing its legacy of opportunity for all

As many companies scale back diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives amid rising political scrutiny, Marriott International has taken a firm and public stand.

The company is reinforcing its DEI initiatives as a non-negotiable pillar of its operations and culture.

The global hospitality leader used its platform at the 2025 Great Place to Work For All Summit to reassert this position, making clear that inclusivity remains central to its 98-year legacy.

DEI is supported by decades of research and is seen as a fundamental aspect of creating a successful and equitable organisation

Marriott’s stance on DEI

DEI efforts have come under increasing pressure, particularly in the US following efforts by President Trump’s administration to limit such programmes in federal agencies and contractors.

Despite this, Marriott is continuing to uphold its longstanding belief in opportunity for all.

The company has declared that “we welcome all to our hotels and we create opportunities for all” – reflecting a deeper truth that DEI is embedded in Marriott’s DNA, not shaped by political winds.

This affirmation was not just a corporate message, it was a clear signal to employees, partners and the wider business community that Marriott will not dilute its values in the face of external challenges.

“The winds blow, but there are some fundamental truths for those 98 years,” explained Anthony Capuano, CEO of Marriott International.

“We welcome all to our hotels, and we create opportunities for all and fundamentally, those will never change. The words might change, but that’s who we are as a company.”

The company’s response to current debates on DEI reframes it not as a social programme but as a structural component of business integrity and operational excellence.

A culture of trust and belonging

Within 24 hours of publicly reaffirming its commitment to DEI,  Anthony received more than 40,000 messages from employees across its global network, expressing appreciation and sharing personal stories the company says.

The flood of responses highlighted the extent to which the company’s inclusive culture resonates with its workforce.

Marriott has an industry-leading employee retention rate of 90%, compared with the hospitality sector’s average of 57%.

With a workforce of more than 800,000 people globally, the company continues to be recognised as one of Fortune’s Best Companies to Work For, ranking eighth in 2025.

DEI as business infrastructure

According to Forbes, Marriott’s approach positions DEI as part of its business infrastructure – integral to consistency, culture and performance.

This alignment fosters trust, which research shows directly correlates with profitability.

Data from Great Place to Work supports this view, showing that companies with high employee trust typically outperform competitors by nearly four times and deliver superior stock market performance.

These outcomes reinforce the idea that sustainable businesses are built on strong internal cultures.

“The 100 Best Companies have built a foundation of employee trust that fuels performance in all areas of their business, not just some areas and not just for some people,” said Michael C Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work.

“They are more profitable and productive because they’ve created consistently positive work experiences, lower burnout rates and higher levels of psychological and emotional health compared to typical workplaces.”

Social sustainability in action

Marriott’s DEI strategy exemplifies social sustainability, a sometimes overlooked but essential dimension of ESG leadership.

Its inclusive policies not only enhance employee wellbeing and satisfaction but also improve service delivery, innovation and long-term business resilience.

By continuing to lead with its values, Marriott is aiming to set a standard in the hospitality industry and beyond.

Alongside other companies such as Delta and Cisco, it is part of a group of businesses that demonstrate how commitment to people is both morally right and commercially effective.

At a time when corporate silence on social issues is becoming more common, Marriott’s clarity stands out.
