We caught up with NHS England’s Associate Director for Net Zero and Procurement, Alexandra Hammond, before Sustainability LIVE: Net Zero

Net zero - an ambitious goal that many organisations, start-ups and individuals are striving to achieve to mitigate climate change.

On 5 and 6 March 2025, Sustainability LIVE: Net Zero will dissect this notable topic and detail the route we can take to reach a carbon-neutral world.

Across the two days, attendees can look forward to networking with plenty of leading executives and engaging with a range of unfiltered keynote presentations and panel discussions that will explore some of the industry’s most notable topics, such as AI, renewable energy and circular economies.

Co-located with Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE: Sustainability, our exclusive event will offer an overarching exploration of Scope 3 emissions and supply chain sustainability, setting out the framework we must adopt to enhance our environmental footprint in 2025 and beyond.

What emerging trends do you believe will shape the future of sustainability over the next decade?

World politics will clearly have an impact, but the transition to a greener economy and ways of working has clear, demonstrable value for business, as well as people and the environment.

I think smaller players, such as NGOs, investors and community-led groups will play a more important role than ever in holding governments to account and pushing for change.

Sustainability at the NHS

In October 2020, the NHS became the first world's health service to commit to reaching net zero.

Since then, the organisation has taken significant strides to improve its environmental footprint through an initiative called 'Greener NHS'.

Between 2028 and 2032, the NHS aims to have reduced the NHS Carbon footprint (emissions they control) by 80% and reach net zero by 2040.

However, it has set an alternative ambition for the emissions they can influence (NHS Carbon Footprint Plus) - reducing emissions by 80% between 2036 and 2039 and reaching net zero by 2045.
