Sustainability LIVE London partners with TreeApp to restore Tanzania forests, planting one tree for every attendee of the event

Sustainability LIVE is continuing its partnership with TreeApp for its annual global summit on 9 and 10 September 2025.

For every attendee of Sustainability LIVE London, TreeApp will plant a tree in the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania.

To date, TreeApp has 57,000 locals involved in the reforestation initiative in the region and has planted 22,105,000 trees, directly supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals on Climate Action, Life on Land and No Poverty.

The Tanzania Reforestation Project

Located in Eastern Africa, Tanzania is known for its biodiversity hotspots. However, human demand places these ecosystems under tremendous resource pressure.

Threats to the West Usambara forests include logging, farmland encroachment and the mass cutting of trees for charcoal and firewood.

The Tanzania Reforestation Project is an initiative set out by TreeApp and local partners to restore forest cover and combat desertification. The project aims to regenerate forests, promote sustainable forestry and combat desertification.

TreeApp works closely with local partners to mobilise and empower the local community and Lushoto District to combat desertification, regenerate forests and promote sustainable forestry.

Sustainability LIVE brings people together to share ideas and drive progress, and Treeapp wanted our support to turn that momentum into action. By planting trees for every attendee, we’re not only helping absorb carbon and restore ecosystems, but also supporting local communities with jobs and resources. For us, it’s vital that the awareness and education shared at Sustainability LIVE are matched with tangible climate action on the ground.

Why does this matter?

Forests in Tanzania continue to provide up to 90% of the country’s energy consumption, making reforestation efforts crucial to safeguard Tanzanian flora and fauna.

TreeApp’s local partners plant across the mountains to restore soil fertility and prevent soil erosion. One tree planted is the Jacaranda, which attracts many local bird species back to the reforestation areas.

The benefits:
  • Improved soil and water quality for communities.
  • Alleviate poverty by providing a source of income.
  • Greater soil fertility for agriculture in the mountainous region and the lowlands.
  • In 2019, TreeApp created jobs for native residents from 205 surrounding villages.
  • Sustainable tourism, in partnership with several organisations, to further provide locals with funding to take care of the ecological heritage.
