VW overtook Tesla for European EV sales in 2025, while BMW, Skoda and Audi also had big sales increases to heap pressure on Elon Musk’s company

Volkswagen overtook Tesla as Europe’s top electric car seller in 2025, ending the American automaker’s long-standing dominance.

The milestone comes just weeks after Chinese EV giant BYD surpassed Tesla to become the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer.

According to DataForce figures, which cover the EU, the UK and EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), Volkswagen’s electric sales jumped 56% year-on-year to 274,417 units. Tesla, meanwhile, saw a 27% drop, selling 238,765 vehicles across the region in 2025.

Europe’s established carmakers fight back

Volkswagen isn’t the only legacy brand accelerating its EV success.

BMW boosted sales 15% last year to 193,186 electric units, while Skoda more than doubled deliveries to 172,000. Audi also gained momentum, climbing 51% to 153,848 vehicles sold.

Volvo Cars is adding pressure too with its new EX60 SUV, boasting a 503-mile range on a single charge.

Expanding choice drives VW’s lead

Tesla’s narrower model lineup weighed on its performance, even though the Model Y remained Europe’s best-selling EV overall.

VW’s broad range—led by the ID.3 hatchback, ID.4 crossover, and ID.7 sedan and wagon—failed to place any single model in the top three but collectively outsold Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 combined.

The Model Y fell 28% year-on-year to 151,331 sales, and the Model 3 declined 23.6% to 86,261.

Inside VW’s ID. range

Volkswagen’s winning formula rests on its expanding ID. lineup:

  • ID.3: A Golf-sized hatchback with a 369-mile range and sportier GTX variant.

  • ID.4: A compact SUV popular with families, offering up to 351 miles (WLTP) or 291 miles (EPA).

  • ID.5: Coupé-styled SUV sibling to the ID.4, reaching 345 miles on a charge.

  • ID.7: Premium saloon and Tourer models, with the Pro S edition delivering up to 436 miles.

  • ID. Buzz: An all-electric revival of the classic Microbus, seating 5–7 passengers and reaching 293 miles per charge.

Global EV shake-up

Globally, Tesla’s near-decade reign ended in 2025 when BYD seized the top spot.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla

Tesla’s worldwide sales dropped 8.6% last year, with fourth-quarter deliveries down 16%. In contrast, BYD’s battery-electric sales surged 28%, securing its dominance.

Tesla first took the global EV crown around 2015, surpassing the Nissan Leaf, and spent much of the ensuing decade grappling with production constraints rather than demand.

BYD, however, has thrived with its vertically integrated supply chain and expansive lineup spanning multiple price segments.

In Europe, Tesla sells just four models, compared with at least seven from BYD.
