As one of the world's most prominent consumer goods companies, Colgate-Palmolive shoulders a global responsibility for environmental sustainability.

Ann Tracy has led the company's sustainability operations since her appointment as Chief Sustainability Officer in early 2020, making a transformative impact on the organisation's environmental strategy in the years since.

By the time she took the role of CSO, Ann had been with Colgate-Palmolive for seven years, holding positions with a focus on supply chains as well as sustainability.

Now, she is reshaping how consumer goods companies approach environmental responsibility and climate action, advocating for a comprehensive and innovative approach to sustainable business practices.

Before Colgate-Palmolive: Ann’s professional background

Ann’s professional journey has seen her integrate environmental responsibility into business practices.

Before taking on her current role, Ann held critical leadership roles within the organisation, focusing on responsible sourcing, ESG strategy and operational efficiency.

Her background in supply chain transformation has been instrumental in reshaping Colgate-Palmolive's approach to sustainable business practices.

Her academic credentials are her true foundation, though.

She initially studied at Lehigh University, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Science, before going on to study at the University of Cambridge and the Tuck School of Business.

This, combined with her practical experience, has allowed Ann to bridge the gap between academic environmental principles and real-world corporate implementation seamlessly.

Driving systemic change in corporate sustainability

At the heart of Ann’s leadership is a profound belief that sustainability should be a cornerstone of business strategies.

She has been pivotal in advancing Colgate-Palmolive's ambitious environmental goals, most notably the commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040 and the transition to 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging by 2025.

One of her most significant achievements has been introducing the industry's first recyclable toothpaste tube, a breakthrough that has set new standards for sustainable packaging in the consumer goods sector.

"We're a brand that reaches six out of ten households worldwide, which gives us both the responsibility and opportunity to influence consumer habits on a global scale," Ann explains.

We have a responsibility not just to innovate but to lead by example and encourage others to join us in this mission.

Global leadership and collaborative approach

Ann’s influence extends far beyond Colgate-Palmolive's corporate boundaries.

She is a respected voice in global sustainability circles, actively participating in international forums such as COP and the Consumer Goods Forum.

She also sits as a full-time Board Member for the UN Global Compact Network USA — a role which comes with huge influence.

Her approach is collaborative, working closely with non-governmental organisations, suppliers and industry leaders to drive meaningful systemic change.

Her strategic vision goes beyond incremental improvements, focusing on transformative solutions in sustainable manufacturing, supply chain management and packaging innovation.

Ann understands that true sustainability requires a holistic approach that considers environmental, social and economic impacts.

Ann’s work on future-focused sustainability strategies

Looking ahead, Ann sees a future where sustainable consumer products become the industry standard, rather than a niche offering.

She champions significant investments in renewable energy, water conservation and biodiversity protection.

“We have a responsibility not just to innovate but to lead by example and encourage others to join us in this mission,” she says.

“It’s all about making it easier for consumers to build sustainable habits at home.”

Under her guidance, Colgate-Palmolive will continue its progress as a leader in corporate environmental stewardship.
