Radisson Hotel Group launches two verified net zero hotels in Manchester and Oslo, meeting 2040 targets today with TÜV Rheinland-certified impact

Radisson Hotel Group has taken a major step towards sustainable hospitality by launching its first two verified net zero hotels.

Located in Manchester and Oslo, these properties meet 2040 climate targets today, decades ahead of schedule.

Verified by TÜV Rheinland, the achievement demonstrates how existing hotels can follow in Radisson's footsteps and be transformed into climate-positive assets.

Eliminating scope emissions

Radisson’s verified net zero programme tackles emissions across the full value chain.

The supply chain for hotel operations (e.g., linens, toiletries, cleaning supplies) has a significant carbon footprint through manufacturing, packaging and transportation.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions are eliminated through electrification and 100% renewable energy, while Scope 3 emissions are cut through operational overhauls and supply chain reform.

Remaining emissions are offset using carbon removal credits from Agreena, Europe’s largest soil carbon programme, which supports 2,300 farmers and regenerates 4.5 million hectares of farmland.

“With the opening of our first two verified net zero hotels, Radisson Hotel Group demonstrates its commitment to net zero 2050 and to showcasing truly sustainable hospitality,” says Inge Huijbrechts, Chief Sustainability & Security Officer at Radisson Hotel Group.

“For the first time, we focus on reducing emissions from energy, operations and the supply chain.

“As we face the evolving challenge of climate change, Radisson Hotel Group is taking an essential step in reshaping the future of hospitality, one verified net zero hotel at a time.”

Comfort without compromise

The sourcing, preparation and disposal of hotel food contributes to emissions, especially if food is imported or wasted.

To tackle this, the verified net zero hotels offer guests 100% renewable energy, low-carbon menus and minimal waste.

Hotels tend to use large amounts of water for guest rooms, pools, landscaping and amenities. The energy required to heat and pump water also contributes to overall emissions.

In Manchester, the use of gas has been eliminated thanks to heat pumps and induction cooking.

The Oslo hotel, set to be in operation in July 2025, will use renewable district heating from sources like waste treatment and data centres.

“Radisson Hotel Group aims to become Net Zero by 2050,” says Federico J. González, Executive Vice Chairman at Radisson Hotel Group.

“While the move is easier in new build properties, the reality is that 80% of the buildings that need to become Net Zero by 2050 are already built.

“We believe it is critical to move as fast as possible with these existing buildings."

Menus are redesigned with Swedish firm Klimato, featuring carbon labelling and up to 40% lower footprints, without compromising on taste.

Waste is minimised through digital tools like eSmiley and the Too Good To Go app, as well as partnerships with Nespresso and Clean the World.

All rooms include recycling bins and plastic-free amenities, and hotel services are available digitally to reduce paper waste.

The renovated and rebranded hotel is located next to Manchester Victoria station and the AO Arena, offering 252 Scandinavian-inspired rooms.

Guests can enjoy the indoor pool, spa, gym, restaurant and outdoor terrace, all designed with sustainability in mind.

Group stays are supported with family-friendly rooms and business travellers benefit from event facilities for up to 220 attendees.

“Today, we are demonstrating that Net Zero conversion hotels are possible,” comments Federico.

“In a conversion approach, the Manchester and Oslo hotels prove that non-sustainable hotels can become high performing asset classes with a positive impact on the planet.

“This approach needs to be serious and verified.

“And we are doing so with TÜV Rheinland.

"These Verified Net Zero hotels bring the future forward and offer guests the pinnacle of sustainable stays.”

Oslo city centre

The Oslo property will become the second Verified Net Zero hotel in the Group’s portfolio.

Powered by renewable energy and aligned with local sustainable infrastructure, it will extend Radisson’s climate-forward hospitality model to Scandinavia.

As Radisson continues to invest in verified low-impact hotels, the model sets a new global standard for the industry.
