Mercedes-AMG set a new EV distance record with help from Signify’s low-energy lighting, blending high-speed performance with sustainability innovation

Mercedes-AMG takes its electric performance ambitions up a gear with its latest record-breaking EV, supported by lighting firm Signify.

Known for its high-powered electric models like the EQS 53 and EQE 53, Mercedes-AMG has claimed a new endurance title for its electric vehicle programme.

The partnership with Signify, a leader in low-energy lighting, focuses not only on boosting lap times but also on creating safer and more sustainable racing environments.

EV distance record

At the heart of this achievement is the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, which completed a world record 40,075 km drive in 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and 7 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG describes it as "basically driving around the world in eight days".

The test takes place at the Nardò Ring in southern Italy, a high-speed track known for rigorous performance testing.

A key part of the record’s success comes from the lighting system installed at critical locations across the circuit.

Signify equipped both the tunnel and the pit stop with its Philips Ledinaire and Color Kinetics technology to ensure safety, visibility and reliability.

These systems operate at reduced energy loads while meeting the needs of high-speed, round-the-clock testing.

Lighting plays a key role in motorsport, but for this test, energy efficiency and environmental impact were factored in.

With vehicles operating at high speeds across long distances, consistent, high-performance lighting at strategic points becomes more than convenience, adding a layer of safety that supports both driver awareness and crew efficiency.

Trackside sustainability

Inside the circuit’s tunnel section, Signify installed its Color Kinetics ColorGraze IntelliHue Powercore fixtures.

These luminaires provide both ambient and functional lighting using a single unit that emits white light along with millions of colour tones.

Positioned strategically, the lighting enhanced driver orientation and ensures constant illumination regardless of weather or external conditions.

In the pit stop and charging zones, Philips Ledinaire all-in floodlights were deployed.

These high-lumen units offer strong lighting needed for technical tasks like tyre changes and mechanical repairs.

The lighting temperature is adjustable via a single switch, allowing teams to adapt conditions in real time.

The floodlights are energy-efficient, supporting long-term use with less impact on power consumption.

For track areas where connection to the grid is limited or unavailable, Signify uses solar-powered lighting solutions.

The SunStay Pro system includes pole-mounted LED luminaires with adjustable angles and built-in solar panels.

With no need for underground cabling, the solution avoids disturbing the natural landscape, making it suitable for temporary or off-grid installations.

High-performance EVs

As Mercedes-AMG pushes further into electric territory, its EV line-up continues to expand.

The AMG EQE Sedan produces up to 677 hp using dual electric motors and the brand's own Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system.

The EQE SUV version reaches around 625 hp with a maximum range of up to 283 miles.

Both vehicles combine traditional AMG design cues with new digital features and powertrains.

The company also plans for a dedicated electric four-door model.

This would take cues from its Vision AMG concept cars, which focus on aerodynamics, performance and integrated infotainment systems.

Acceleration speeds as fast as 0-60 mph in 3 seconds and power outputs topping 751 hp are part of this push, which also maintains the comfort and interior quality expected from AMG.
