Earth Day 2025: Our Power, Our Planet

On Tuesday 22 April 2025, more than a billion people across more than 190 countries are predicted to unite for the 55th anniversary of Earth Day — a global movement that has become the largest secular observance in the world.
This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” calls for urgent collective action to accelerate the global shift to renewable energy.
With the ambitious goal of tripling clean electricity generation by 2030, Earth Day 2025 places the spotlight firmly on solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal and geothermal power as catalysts for climate stability.
Reflecting on Earth Day 2024
Last year's Earth Day centred on the theme Planet vs. Plastics, which brought global attention to the environmental and health impacts of plastic pollution.
Advocacy efforts called for a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040 and championed policies to phase out single-use plastics.
The campaign spurred renewed public pressure on governments and companies to invest in sustainable packaging, circular economy models and stronger waste management infrastructure.
The momentum built in 2024 laid the foundation for this year’s broader push towards clean energy and climate resilience.
Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has served as a turning point for environmental reform.
What began as a US-based rallying against pollution, has since driven the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and key legislations such as the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act.
Now a global event, Earth Day continues to rally individuals, communities, businesses and governments in a joint mission – to preserve ecosystems, mitigate climate change and push for a sustainable future.
Earth Day 2025
This year’s activities reflect the scale and urgency of the climate crisis. Initiatives include:
- Community clean-ups in urban, rural and coastal areas
- Live educational events, such as the BBC’s school rainforest expedition
- Advocacy campaigns demanding policy reform and investment in renewables
- Sustainability fairs and workshops on circular economy practices and low-carbon living
These initiatives aim to raise awareness of climate challenges, promote responsible resource use and inspire environmental stewardship at every level of society.
“Earth Day is the cornerstone of my year, and this year, Italy represents the perfect backdrop for a message of unity around the critically important subject of energy,” explains Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY.ORG
“We will demonstrate that renewable energy transcends political divides. Embracing it delivers multiple benefits simultaneously: strengthening the global economy, creating millions of new jobs, enhancing energy independence and improving affordability for both businesses and citizens alike.
“On top of that, it benefits human health and the health of the planet. This is not about politics – it is about pragmatic solutions that benefit us all. Which is why this is such a unique gathering of political, economic, faith and industry leaders.”
Corporate climate commitments
A growing number of businesses are embedding Earth Day into broader sustainability agendas.
For example:
- Starbucks aims to certify 10,000 Greener Stores by 2025, halving emissions by 2030.
- Apple has cut its carbon footprint by 45% since 2015 and plans to make all products carbon neutral by 2030.
- NASA is leveraging satellite data to track Earth’s health and champion green technology.
- ASICS launched an eco-collection using circular manufacturing and recycled textiles.
- Target is designing all owned brand products for a circular future by 2040.
- Leidos and Lowe’s are investing in smarter grids and rooftop solar to reduce emissions.
- Sony, Kohler, Yum! Brands (Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC) and McDonald’s are also scaling biodiversity initiatives, waste reduction and sustainable sourcing.
Getting involved
Earth Day is for everyone. Individuals can participate by:
- Joining or hosting local clean-up/planting events or sustainability workshops
- Advocating for renewable energy policies
- Supporting circular economy brands, small businesses and cutting personal emissions
- Educating others on the climate crisis and solutions
Whether you're planting trees, switching to reusable products or pushing for greener legislation, every action contributes to the greater good.
Earth Day 2025 is more than a date on the calendar — it’s a reminder that the power to transform our planet lies in collective action.
By tripling renewable energy generation and embracing sustainable practices, we can forge a cleaner, more equitable future for generations to come.
