A Look Inside Walmart’s Sustainable New US Headquarters

Retail giant Walmart has unveiled its sustainably-built and designed New Home Office campus, which will be the base for thousands of employees.
The facility in Bentonville, Arkansas, US – its home city for 60 years – features a host of shops, 750,000 newly-planted native flowers and 300 EV charging points.
Cindi Marsiglio, SVP, Corporate Real Estate, Walmart, said: “This is a moment I’ve been dreaming about for years.
“After lots of planning, ground-breaking ceremonies and hard hat tours, we’re celebrating the opening of our New Home Office campus in Bentonville. And wow, what a place it is.”
A world-class campus
Cindi added: “This isn't just a workplace; it's a nod to our proud past and our bright future, sparking innovation and community.
“It’s a world-class campus, Walmart style – one that genuinely mirrors our core values and mission, respects our legacy and fuels our future.”
The campus was inspired throughout the planning process by Walmart employees, who put forward thousands of ideas, on everything from design features to wellness offerings to eateries.
Cindi said: “Whether it’s natural light flooding every corner, convenient parking options, fitness and childcare facilities, or expanded food choices at 8th & Plate, the goal was simple: to create a workplace where associates can thrive.
“This campus is proof of what’s possible when we put people first.”
It will also feature a parade of shops, including: Bentonville Bicycle Company, Flyway Brewing, Gearhead Outfitters, The Gents Place, Hatch Early Mood Food, Jamba Juice, Riserva Bar + Tapas, Swig, Walmart Pharmacy, Wright's BBQ and Yokozuna Sushi.
Smart, sustainable design
Sustainability and technology informed every decision.
The buildings are constructed from mass timber – the largest application of its kind in the US – and designed to achieve LEED Platinum standards.
Half the campus is green space, with more than 750,000 native plants, including 5,000 planted trees.
Transport features include:
- Seven miles of walking and cycle paths
- Over 1,000 bike parking spots
- 300 EV charging stations
- A rentable bike fleet.
There are also smart building features:
- Dynamic glass that reduces energy use
- Drone-assisted window cleaning
- Autonomous lawn care.
CSO’s seal of approval
Kathleen McLaughlin, EVP and Chief Sustainability Officer, Walmart, and Sustainability Magazine’s Number One in the Top 100 Women 2024, said on LinkedIn: “I am inspired by the ingenuity of the many people who designed and built the campus; it is a tangible example of our ongoing commitment to associate well-being and to sustainability.”
She said the on-campus lakes span 13 acres, capturing and cleaning rainwater – expected to supply over 52 million gallons of water annually.
“This drive to reduce, reuse and recycle resources is core to our company’s zero waste ethos and an important part of our every-day-low cost culture.”
The campus also includes on-site childcare, while the Walton Whole Health and Fitness Center provides associates access to classes, facilities and events.
The miles of walking and cycle paths are also open to the community to enjoy the natural beauty of the Ozarks and linking up to the Razorback Greenway, connecting people to Bella Vista, Rogers, Springdale, Lowell, Fayetteville and beyond.
Kathleen said: “I am excited about the opportunities for collaboration this new campus will bring for fellow associates and the wider community.”
